8:39pm
would be a good time to turn down the thermostat
to climb deep inside lambswool slippers
that were an uncommon and lovely gift
to peer into a t.v. screen as if it were a cloth screen
lit by a flickering movie reel behind me somewhere
and spinning frame by frame through
a colorful French movie set in the rain
with yellow subtitles that are completely unnecessary
because the rich soil of southern France
and the earthy stews boiling over the fire
and the hearty love story needs no translation
and it would be raining in the movie,
and there would be a soundtrack of piano music:
something reminiscent of satie,
with a haunted charming melody
and a lilting waltz pattern in the left hand
and in my left hand i would hold a tall-stemmed glass of red wine,
as rich and deep as the movie i'd watch,
and i would curl up gracefully on the couch
like a goddess reclining in some ancient time,
but without someone feeding me grapes
