After Taking the 147 Bus Home

The circle of the earth,
the dome of the heavens,
the separation of day from night
and dark from light:
all reversed tonight,

heaven and earth exchanged
in a moment of frozen baptism
and utmost freshness.

Deepest brightness of the cosmos
drifts to the soil,
holding its breath,
diving below the heights of heavenly hosts
to mingle with the beagles in the park,
who drag their bellies through the new drifts
and kick up snow like feathers falling.

This is the richest silence;

Spirit and light and air
hovering lightly over
the blanket of the earth

and the notion of the
deafening loudness
of unuttered
grace.
