Thin Space

Today is
rain after the drought:

Greening the grass,
Slicking the pavement,
Pulling the smell of earth in through the windows,
Overcast overhead.

Today is
Thick air, thin space,
Mists and downpours,

Baptisms for

worried fathers sitting on my couch,
grieving sons and daughters,
men looking for train tickets home,
teenagers saving teenagers,
married couples hanging on by a thread.

Today is Monday.
Today is rain.
Today is thin,
quick to the heart.
