saving knowledge

salvation appears as a light,
they say.
a real light, a beam from heaven,
a sunny strip along the road,
a fluorescent bulb flickering with meaning,
or the tempting eye of a searchlight
criss-crossing in the air

for my eyes have seen the salvation...
of others.

could God send grace in a snowfall
or redemption in the smell of the radiator that keeps warm this sullen room?
is there mercy in the treads of my tires,
atonement in weeping like a child,
faith along the crowded and impersonal walk to work?

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,"
someone cries from another room.

for they have seen salvation in the bitterly ordinary
and the broken pieces of life
(jigsaw puzzled:
individual pieces for joy and fear,
love, trust, depression, wonder,
lust, pain, deception, knowledge,
truth.)
