returning

autumn comes back: a faithful friend
beautiful as it withers and strips bare
laying out the naked shapes of treelimbs
the curves of the earth unadorned
and unembelleshed by grass and growth

truth revealed

fall falls and i rise to the sound of one hundred voices
in song and ritual,
blossoming and blessing and opening like flowers in the springtime

he comes back to greet me after the long absence of a missionary
or a superhero

after tending to the flood and fury
and the gunfire
the smoke and the flames
bruises and brokenness
the serious things of life

he returns to find me among the friendly trees
as naked as the birches

this time i don't turn my back
