While I don't eat much fast food and while I try to cook "from scratch" more than I eat prepackaged or processed foods, I still don't think that I am the healthiest eater ever. That is to say, I don't eat as much fruit as I should, and I'm a total pasta addict, and Matt and I eat more cheese than, well, let's just say we eat a lot of it. But that all being said, we don't keep much snack food in the house. Maybe some Wheat Thins or the occasional bag of tortilla chips and a jar of salsa. I go through phases when I eat a lot of yogurt, but I also go through phases when I crave pizza and Asian take-out. But mostly we eat a lot of pasta dishes with random combinations of meat/veggies, and we've gotten to making fried rice or lo mein about once a week, again loaded with chicken and veggies. So I suppose that while I have a healthy appetite, I'm eating meals that are more balanced than not, and my diet is not overly junk-foody, even if not terribly health-conscious.
But this weekend, we've had some friends around for a fantasy baseball draft weekend, and to entertain the masses, we opened up four boxes of girl scout cookies, and we've eaten through two different bags of ruffles, plus some tortilla chips and a lot of soda and coffee, and some cheese nips, on top of a very heavy (and tasty!) lasagna meal, complete with salad and bread. And there's been plenty of beer and wine around.
I feel very sick.
It became apparent to me this afternoon that I really don't eat much in the way of junky junk food (cookies, chips, etc.), and my stomach isn't so good at dealing with it when I end up eating it in some quantity. Ugh. Tummyache. I think this is a good sign; my body isn't accustomed to so much grease and sugar, which makes me think that in terms of my daily food intake, I am actually eating food that is nourishing, even if I sometimes eat too much of it!
Right now, I am craving a veggie and pasta dish that is more veggie than pasta. Or a veggie-loaded soup like my throw-together minestrone. Mmmm...good food...
Boo on junk food...
hey, melissa! that is exactly how we felt after three weeks of panda express, mcdonald's, giordano's, rosati's, gino's east, wendy's, and more panda express! america is full of temptations, and we learned that you can't tackle them all in three weeks without some major regrets! steph and i went to panera the day before we left, and it was refreshing! soup and sandwich. no regrets. ok, we did have chips...
